Melanie Mathewson

Associate

As a Native Californian deeply invested in electoral politics and public policy, Melanie has spent nearly a decade in this field globally and locally.

During a pivotal six-month period in Dubrovnik, Croatia, esteemed mentors profoundly influenced Melanie, igniting her passion for International Relations and Diplomacy. This experience propelled her to pursue a Master’s Degree in Public Policy at Northeastern University, where her studies centered on civic education and grassroots political engagement.

During Melanie’s tenure in Boston, she helped organize Mayor Wu’s historic mayoral campaign, was a finalist in both the Yale and MIT Policy Competitions, where she contributed to Boston’s housing and zoning policies and helped the Emerald Necklace Conservancy secure additional green space for Boston’s most vulnerable communities.

Before joining BMWL, Melanie was deeply involved in civic technology, leveraging data analytics to enhance local governance. Her diverse background includes roles with the Town of Brookline, Climate XChange, and Senator Elizabeth Warren’s office, where she honed my research and political strategy skills.

Beyond my professional endeavors, Melanie has always been a dedicated athlete. She captained my collegiate soccer team, led the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and co-founded the Lesley University Title IX committee. Her undergraduate thesis, exploring the ramifications of Trump’s immigration policies on international students, was nominated for an undergraduate social impact research award and was instrumental in helping her win Student-Athlete of the Year.

When she is not at work, Melanie enjoys exercising, exploring San Francisco, visiting her family in wine country and playing soccer when she can!
